SUNSHINE STARS 3-0 PILLARS:
Akure Stadium records highest turnout

THE Week 13 Glo Nigeria Professional Football League match between League leaders Sunshine Stars and reigning champions, Kano Pillars witnessed an unprecedented turn out of spectators at the Akure Township Stadium.
Official attendance record as released by the home team was 6,749 spectators but there must have been close to 8,000 spectators in the Stadium.
The Ondo State Football Agency has done a lot of work in bringing the fans back to the stand to support Sunshine Stars and other Ondo teams but must have been overwhelmed by the turn out of Week 13 Sunshine Stars’ encounter.
The 3-0 scoreline was the icing on the cake for the fans that had a fun filled day of all round entertainment at the stadium. The excitement started with a performance by a dance crew and other side attractions put in place by the management of ODSFA to entertain fans and supporters of Sunshine Stars FC.
It is no longer new that people from all walks of life are beginning to abandon the streets on home match days to give their support to their darling team as witnessed in the match day 13 game of Sunshine Stars. It is on record that fans who couldn’t find sitting space decided to stand while some went as far as sitting on the fence and hanging on uncompleted building in the stadium.
Of a fact, the stadium now occupies more than its official capacity during Akure Gunners’ home matches. As it is, there is a need for expansion of the stadium in order to avoid stampede or casualty in the course of watching matches.
Call has gone out to the Ondo State Government for the expansion of the Akure Township stadium by its people and lovers of the game.
The expansion is expected to be carried out as soon as possible to ensure that the Confederation of African Football (CAF) does not disqualify Akure stadium peradventure Sunshine Stars qualify to represent Nigeria in the continental competitions.
