Aguero can help Iheanacho become a top player-Yaya
AFRICAN Player of the Year, Yaya Toure insists Manchester City's Nigeria youngster Kelechi Iheanacho is perfectly placed to continue his rapid ascent.
Kelechi Iheanacho made another step forward in his burgeoning career when he played the final 36 minutes of Nigeria’s goalless draw with Swaziland last week to earn his international debut.
It is the latest achievement in the rapid ascent experienced by Manchester City’s 19-year-old wonder kid following his promotion to the club’s first-team squad this season.
But one person already convinced of his ability and potential is City team-mate Yaya Toure.
Sergio Aguero’s likely return to the fold for the Blues’ clash with Liverpool on Saturday following injury is set to limit Iheanacho’s opportunities in that fixture, though he will be hopeful of another place on the bench.
But Toure insists the youngster is ideally placed to learn from the Argentine master.
And he backs manager Manuel Pellegrini’s decision to elevate him and other youngsters such as Patrick Roberts, Pablo Maffeo and Manu Garcia from the junior ranks.
“Credit to Pellegrini as well because the lads are training lots with the first team,” he said.
“Kelechi has been able to see Aguero every training session and try to work like him. It’s fantastic, I’m very happy for him.
“I always say when you put a good player in a great team with good players around him then they will always perform well.”
Toure believes Iheanacho - who already has two first-team goals to his name against Crystal Palace in the Premier League and Capital One Cup - has the intelligence and ability to become ‘one of the top players’.
And he believes he is in the ideal environment to do so.
“When I started at Barcelona it was always easy to play with great players and learn as well,” he added. “They help you to progress. He’s young and still learning. You have to be focused and fully committed.
"I am delighted for him and I always give him advice because Kelechi is fantastic; he is clever, he listens very carefully and he works hard in training.
“I think for me Iheanacho has the potential to progress and be one of the top players one day.”
