COACH Gbenga Ogunbote could be heading to new Nigeria Premier League champions, Enyimba FC of Aba before the kick-off of the new season.
NaijaSportsXtra understands that the Shooting Stars of Ibadan gaffer was one of the coaches penciled down to take over from veteran coach, Kadiri Ikhana who could be retiring from the dug-out after guiding the Peoples Elephants to a record 7th Nigeria Premier League title, or be of quality assistance to Ikhana during the CAF Champions League.
Ogunbote's rich resume and his good performance with the Oluyole Warriors is what could have attracted Enyimba's management, as the former Gateway FC coach did come close to winning the league title, CAF Champions League and Confederations Cup with Sunshine Stars of Akure.
Speaking with NaijaSportsXtra on the news, a Shooting Stars insider who does not want his name disclosed said: “We are aware of Enyimba’s interest right from the week Ogunbote began to turn things around for the Oluyole Warriors.
“If I may use the word, other clubs too have been poaching him. I mean whose team or management does not want a quality coach.
“For us, its ‘Ogunbote magic’, took a team that was placed 17th on the log, to end the season on 9th. So why Enyimba go after him,” he asked.
Asked about the Oluyole Warriors, “They have been on break after the season ended, but no returning date yet for the players.
“As regards the friendly in honour of the new Ooni of Ife, it’s our feeder team, 3SC Starlets that will tackle Ajiroba and not the main team.”
