MOUNTAIN of Fire FC 1st Assistant Coach, Alli Suleman Obinna has informed that they can get their campaign into the new season right with the Gold Cup pre-season tournament.
A delighted Obinna watched from the dug-out as the trio of Gabriel Onaah, Isah Akor and Alashe Sherif put three second half goals past Sunshine Stars of Akure in their first Group B game.
"We intend to do better than last season, using the Gold Cup platform as a test ground for blending both old and the new players.
"Mind you, from the kick-off of the tourney, we did tell ourselves that the ultimate goal was not to come to Ijebu-Ode to win the Gold Cup, rather to see if the new players we have brought can fit into our football philosophy and in the long run help us achieve our set goals in the upcoming season which begins in December," he told Gold Cup Media.
Asked to comment on his tactics which saw the Olukoya Boys winning the game from the bench against a youthful and naive Akure Gunners after half time scores stood at 0-0.
"Yes to some point. After assessing the first half performances of the players that started the game, we concluded that they lacked cohesion upfront.
Not that they were attacking but converting the chances was what they lacked. So we had to replace the void by making the necessary substitution and at the end, the goals started to come."
The team he noted isn't carried away by the victory as there are other games to play.
"This is just our first in the other games to come. As regards our next opponents, FC Ebiede, we intend not to take them with kid glove as they did create one of the pre-season tourney up-set when they defeated Niger Tornadoes in their opening Group A game.
"They are also difficult to play against as they have a good coach and the player play as a unit."
MFM FC leads Group B on a better goals difference despite been on 3points with Ebiede.
