LAST season's Nigeria Premier League top scorer, Godwin Obaje will be handed his Rashidi Yekini award at the Gold Cup pre-season tournament in Ijebu-Ode.
Gold Cup Media gathered that the facilitator and founder of the foundation, Barrister Jibril Mohammed will present a giant plaque and a #.1 Million Naira (100,000) to the prolific striker whose 18 goals handed Wikki Tourists of Bauchi a CAF Confederation Cup slot after finishing third on the league table.
“Rashidi Yekini Highest goal scorer award has come to stay because this is the second edition of the annual award named after one of the most prolific goal scorer Africa has ever produced.
“We want to thank the organisers of the Gold Cup Competition who have formed a synergy with us to make this year’s edition a reality. After deliberating on so many factors, we deemed it fit to hold the presentation over there in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun state because of Wikki Tourists involvement in the tournament."
Late Rashidi Yekini died on the 4th of May 2012.
Coordinator of the prestigious pre-season tourney, Tunde Shamsudeen thanked Barrister Mohammed for the gesture of presenting the award in Ijebu-Ode.
"It's a milestone for the tournament, as late Rashidi Yekini was a football icon not just in Nigeria, Africa but the World.
"His legacy remains with us, as I recall watching him score and celebrated Nigeria's first ever World Cup goal in the 3-0 thrashing of Bulgaria in USA 94.
"We hope to partner with the foundation as the award presentation can be done at subsequent Gold Cup tourneys," he said.
Meanwhile, Chairman of Wikki Tourists FC of Bauchi,Honourable Matori will be leading families and friends of Godwin Obaje to the event on Saturday to receive the award.
Kobi Nasiru,the spokes person of the CAF Confederation Cup flag bearers confirmed that Obaje is out of the country to CSKA Moscow where he is set to finalize a deal with the Moscow giants.
